Wolverine Oilfield Technologies Expands Zenith™ RSS Portfolio with 6¾-in System
HOUSTON, Texas — November 2021 —
Wolverine Oilfield Technologies added a 6¾-in configuration to its Zenith™ rotary steerable system (RSS) portfolio following successive deployments in multiple test wells in the United States. The new system complements the commercially deployed 4¾-in Zenith RSS and extends the technology portfolio across a broader range of drilling applications.
Wolverine commercially released the Zenith RSS in 2020 in response to operator requirements for improved well placement and more efficient directional drilling. The continuously rotating, push-the-bit system is designed to support both precise geosteering and higher dogleg requirements while reducing bottom-hole assembly complexity through an integrated RSS, measurement-while-drilling, and logging-while-drilling configuration.
During one reported deployment in an 8½-in hole section, the system built inclination from 26.9 degrees at an azimuth of 237 degrees to 92.5 degrees at an azimuth of 254 degrees. A power section was added to the bottom-hole assembly at 43.2 degrees inclination and remained in the assembly for the rest of the section.
The RSS operated at a maximum rotary speed of 215 rpm and achieved a rate of penetration of 220 ft/hr. The company also reported high dogleg performance with both bottom-hole assembly configurations used during the run.
The addition of the 6¾-in system gives operators access to Zenith RSS configurations for different hole sizes while retaining the same core push-the-bit steering approach. At the time of the announcement, the 4¾-in system had already been deployed commercially in multiple wells during 2021.
