HOUSTON, Texas — June 2021 —

Wolverine Oilfield Technologies commercially launched its proprietary 4¾-in Zenith™ rotary steerable system (RSS) following field trials in the United States and Russia. The launch moved the system from pilot deployment into commercial availability for directional and horizontal drilling applications.

The 4¾-in Zenith RSS was designed by Wolverine Oilfield Technologies and first presented on 3 March 2021 during the Gibson Reports virtual event, “Push It, Point It, Rotate It.” The system is a continuously rotating, push-the-bit RSS designed to maintain directional control while drilling complex well trajectories.

Continuous rotation is intended to reduce drag and stick-slip risk, improve hole quality, and support smoother wellbores with lower tortuosity. Near-bit gamma ray, inclination, and azimuth measurements provide additional information for steering decisions and enable a faster response to formation changes.

During field trials in Russia, the Zenith RSS drilled three long horizontal sections and maintained trajectory control with on-plan execution in all three wells. The company reported a 20% improvement in rate of penetration during the trials. The comparison baseline for this figure should be confirmed before republication.

Wolverine also completed testing of the 6¾-in Zenith RSS series at the Catoosa test facility in Oklahoma. At the time of the announcement, field testing of that configuration in Russia was planned for late summer 2021.
